Business Intelligence for SMEs

Countries in the Southeast Asian region have huge communities of small-to-medium scale enterprises (SMEs), many of whom employ thousands of workers and contribute to their GDP. In fact, most Southeast Asian countries have more SMEs as registered businesses than large enterprises. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) puts the number of SMEs at 96% of all enterprises and employing up to 85% of overall workforce. SMEs also account for up to 30% of exports and contribute around 50% of GDP.
But despite their huge numbers and contribution to their respective country’s GDP, SMEs have yet to largely tap information technology (IT) to improve their business. Apart from just using computers to improve operations, businesses can use IT to forecast and even drive growth. Old data that businesses store can be just as valuable in the future as they were in the past. This is the value that business intelligence offers.
Business intelligence or BI refers to an IT-based process of collecting, analyzing and forecasting company performance based on past, raw data. This must come with the collection of all raw data and analyzing these to come up with effective and strategic planning and decision making. Companies that have sales data, for instance, can collect past reports, factor in their performance for certain seasons, and come up with strategic campaigns. The data they collect in the past should guide them in their future needs.
But what other values does BI have for SMEs whose operations and client campaigns are not as big as larger enterprises? Most SMEs do not have enough raw data to be used to review, much less for business intelligence. While BI is dependent on relevant data, there are still models of BI that SMEs can tap into in order to be better decision makers for their businesses. Initial implementations would require the SME to know what exactly they would want with BI and how it should help them in improving their business. Simply answering this question is already business intelligence in itself as the company owners become aware of what they need for long-term gains.
Once the right BI services or facilities are in place, it is time to put it to work; collecting existing data say for sales, comparing these to other data in their business and perhaps using outside factors or information to extrapolate key information, then analyzing potential gains and challenges for certain strategic decisions.
The key factor in good BI implementation is basic knowledge of what to do in the long term. Some SMEs, whether they are new or have been in the business for a while, must determine what they really want to do for their business. Next would be to look for the tools they would need to achieve those goals. If IT solutions are seen as good contributors to their targets, they could then select the best technologies to fit their needs.of
course, SMEs do not have the size to actually implement a full scale BI solution. This puts them somewhat at a disadvantage especially against larger companies that have the scale and financial capacity. Most BI solutions require professionals within an organization to be managed and being as they are, SMEs do not have enough manpower to spare to accommodate the needs of a BI infrastructure. Such a gap could undermine the competitiveness of SMEs against larger organizations.
BI should cater to all types of businesses, regardless of type and scale. There are still BI solutions that also cater to small operations to allow them to overcome competitive hurdles and achieve long term sustainability and perhaps even expand.
Some of these BI solutions are already in the cloud and as the providers become more aware of the unique needs of SMEs, new solutions are created to address those needs and be tweaked along the way.
Cloud computing is paving the way for SMEs to go toe-to-toe with each other and even against bigger companies. In a cloud computing environment, SMEs will only need to pay for services they use. There is almost little need to actually implement any physical IT infrastructure; everything is online, save for the desktop device on location that is used to access the service. SAP, for instance, has Business All in One (BAIO) and Business Intelligence OnDemand on a cloud computing environment. SMEs can use these services, thereby cutting down on costs in using BI.
It is not the size of the business that matters in implementing BI but rather how to be smart in utilizing data. Solutions providers, such as SAP are already laying out the types of Business Intelligence services that SMEs could need.
All they need to do is ask and they’ll be on their way to become better-run companies.

55,000 Subscribers Qubee Bags : Mubashir Naqvi

Qubee has become the fastest growing broadband network of Pakistan with focus on excellence, customer care with global standards in service quality since the start of commercial operations from June 2010.
This was stated by Mubashir Naqvi, C.E.O. of Qubee, in an exclusive interview with GlobelNews .
“With an aim of providing uninterrupted broadband service to everyone, everyday without exception and in our first year, we have managed to acquire more than 55,000 subscribers”, revealed Mr. Naqvi.
Since inception, it has been my belief to stay committed and ensure best-in-class broadband services to the customers in pursuance of the company vision, “Broadband for All”.
The Qubee team has always kept a customer centric focus in all of its actions, maintaining a service quality standard which is at par with our international guidelines, said Mr. Naqvi.
Qubee with a cost-effective business model, standardized customer care & smart marketing has helped us gain a significant success in a very competitive broadband market of Pakistan, Mubashir said while explaining the success of Qubee in Pakistan.
The secret behind our achievement is the ambition to facilitate our customers at any cost. We have facilitated our customers with multiple package options to get affordable broadband along with immense opportunities to get extra services at no additional cost, which is supplemented by a good number of Customer Care Stores that serve customers and help them connect to a world of endless possibilities.
The core strategy is to keep operational expenditures (OPEX) tightly controlled as compared to other market players that contributes to success in a manner by which we earn better and spend less. The investment capital expenditures’ (CAPEX) is significantly heavy, which has allowed us to introduce the advanced technology of 4T4R on WiMAX with latest Consumer Premises Equipment (CPE).
We also try to keep our revenues not only growing but also safe with a low bad-debt ratio through smart planning, budgeting and overall business strategy, explained Mr. Naqvi.
In addition to that we have also kept the coverage challenge at bay economically by sharing BTS locations with different cellular operators without compromising on the quality of the service. Qubee has a total of 416 sites installed in four cities combined – Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore.
Last but surely not the least is our personalized sales & marketing model through which we have developed a modified personal sales & distribution channel that currently has 71 sales points across the four metros, CEO Qubee said.
We have managed to retain our customer base with service quality by offering different packages, promotions & different benefits periodically for our subscribers. As a matter of fact, Qubee has the lowest churn per month as against 90-day churn policy followed in the industry.
Our subscriber base has crossed the benchmark of 60,000 as per PTA definition to subscriber reporting. However, we consider our customers base at 55,000, this is because our internal customer base policy is very stringent, due to which the company posted positive revenues & EBTIDA at the end of the first year of commercial operations in comparison to other WiMAX operators who are facing difficult financial challenges despite showing high subscription growth.
Furthermore, exceptional service quality and a personalized marketing and selling model have helped us generate great word-of-mouth. In line with our broad range pricing strategy, we target a relatively wide cross-section of the broadband consumer base of Pakistan.
Currently, our customers can avail a full-month of free internet services by paying three months line rent in advance. They can also enjoy additional 2 GB extra every month by paying their bills on time, and that’s not all. They can also refer their friends and enjoy 20% discounts on Qubee monthly bills. All of these offers have gained us very healthy response from customers.
To provide consumers with greater access to broadband, we introduced the 1st true prepaid broadband service in Pakistan. It is a very affordable with pay as you go facility that provides endless access to the world of Internet and technology.
Qubee customers are loyal, because as an operator, we provide uninterrupted broadband services with different packages and payment solutions for all segments, Mubashir concluded.

Telenor Revamps Easypaisa Website, Launches a New Branding Campaign

easypaisa Telenor Revamps Easypaisa Website, Launches a New Branding Campaign
Telenor Pakistan has completely revamped it’s EasyPaisa website, with more pleasant and I must say, refreshing look.
Built totally on Joomla CMS, Telenor has done a great job here. Easy to navigate links and drop down menus are one of the most important features that EasyPaisa website has incorporated. On the whole the design is pretty eye catching and links to all services on home page provides real ease of access – making navigation super fast.
But I wonder why Telenor didn’t inherit the link-structure from the old design?Instead Telenor is using Joomla’s default pattern of links. This will make Telenor let go all the search engine rank/juice it had gained on previous URL’s.
As you can see all previous links which were search engine friendly, are not working anymore.
    For instance:
    • http://www.easypaisa.com.pk/tameerbank.php
    • http://www.easypaisa.com.pk/shop-locator.php
Transation Tracking is the new feature that EasyPaisa has included, which helps you check the status of any transaction done through Easypaisa as well as remaining monthly limit for a particular CNIC. Though CNIC limit checking feature requires only the CNIC with no authentication (Some may dislike this openness).
Media Centre has been equipped with Photo Gallery and Print Media Releases. Easypaisa Shop menu gives you option to request for an easypaisa shop in your areaalso you can search for the nearby shops where Easypaisa is available.
On the whole, the website design is pretty good, and seems like it is just the design that Telenor had wished for.
Things which need improvement are Search, and above all the CNIC Usage feature (which reveals the usage details of any CNIC without authentication). Links may not be a big issue at the moment as even if you are unable to google something about easypaisa, just visit the website and almost all the links are available at home page.

    Branding Campaign:

Telenor has decided to give the due exposure to easypaisa mobile accounts now, which were earlier undermined as compared to other easypaisa products.
Though easypaisa mobile accounts were introduced in February 2010, while level 1, level 2, 3 and 4 accounts were available to public as well – but Telenor thought of arranging a launch ceremony to properly introduce Easypaisa Mobile Accounts.
A ceremony was held in this regards in Karachi yesterday, where Mobile Accounts were demoed followed by a musical show by strings.

Day Celebrated Social Media in Islamabad

Social media activists from all across the city gathered in Café Eclipse, Islamabad to celebrate Social Media Day on 30th June 2011.

The purpose was to unite a community of social media users to discuss its ever increasing role and importance, and to encourage positive contributions in this medium.

The event started with a brief introduction of Social Media and the extent of its reach, followed by an interactive discussion on the myths of social media. The participants took turn in arguing whether a certain myth was true or untrue. Examples include discussion on social media as a free marketing tool, social media and its contribution in mental development, etc.

Further pressing issues, like the role of social media in world politics, especially in bringing about a revolution in the African nations were discussed. The participants were asked for their opinion on whether a similar situation in Pakistan could be possible. The audience responded with why they did or did not agree with that prognosis.

“We can’t have a revolution in Pakistan as long as we sit in the comfort of our homes and disassociate ourselves with the events happening around us”, says a participant.

The session was also punctuated with interactive activities like a scavenger hunt. The participants had to identify people with certain knowledge/experience on social media, and get their signatures.

There was a lucky draw in which 3 winners were announced. Sponsored gifts, like Google t-shirts, key chains and diaries, movie tickets sponsored by Cinepax and chocolates by Askoli (an internet marketing firm) were distributed amongst the participants throughout the session. Live tweets and status updates were featured and displayed on a screen during the session.

    Mobo International’s Website Gets Horrible

We have discussed over and over about the importance of maintaining official websites and how they impact company’s reputation in market.
Customer always have a soft corner for the brands having official websites and they (unintentionally) give priority to them, considering it more quality product or organization, which is not necessarily true though.
MOBO International which provides warranty for mobile phones is now dedicatedly serving Samsung Mobiles.
Mobo International’s website www.mobointernational.com is under construction, even worse, the webmaster seems to be pretty ill-mannered in nature and is using foul words in website’s title.
Mobo International’s website title says: ” ::-Mobo f**king you Internationa-:: “
Part of the main page source code is shown here:

    ::-Mobo fucking you Internationa-::
mobo international Mobo Internationals Website Gets Horrible
It merits mentioning here that the website is still under construction and we do not see any sign of hacking attempt so that someone else might have changed it.
Also the website is being hosted on a shared account so there are least chances of unauthorized access but from those who have credential details.
We are not yet sure about who actually is maintaining the website and any news on the issue will be updated, as we are in process to get some.

Google Plus: What, Why, How and The Future

This article isn’t a Google Plus tutorial, instead we will try to analyze the features and will compare them with other social networks.
For basic tips and usage details, please check our this article: Google Plus: Basic Tips for Beginners
clip image002 thumb Google Plus: What, Why, How and The Future
Do you remember the time when Orkut was invite only, everything you did there was open to everyone and everyone was happy & excited.
Time changed, came Facebook – I remember telling everyone to join Facebook and they were reluctant, they didn’t care then. Slowly it gained grounds and up till now was considered as the only Elephant in the room.
When everyone thought that there is no more space for anyone in this room (especially considering the Facebook’s enormous growth), Google came in with Google Plus.

    Introduction:

    So, what is Google+?
clip image004 thumb Google Plus: What, Why, How and The Future
    Source: XKCD
The image says it right, Google+ is Facebook [period]. It is what many of us always wanted Facebook to be.
What looks like Google did here is this: you have Orkut, Wave (old story now), Buzz, +1, Gmail, Docs, Picasa Albums, Groups, Youtube, GTalk & Search.
You competitor in the social market had 700 Million plus following, Photo & Video Sharing, Chat, Groups & Fan Pages. Google looked into what led to their failure with the previous experiments and what led to their competitor’s success and then built a product on the competitor’s weaknesses combined with its own strengths.
For example you get tighter privacy control (Facebook’s weakness), Video Chat simultaneously with up to 10 people (GTalk, Google’s strength – Facebook chat is no where near to this) with this you get Sparks (Google Search) also integration of Google+ with other Google services.
Not to mention, Facebook has announced in-browser video conference feature coming to their platform next week, but this is a start of head to head battle between the giants.

    Stream:

Let’s get back to basics – you get a Wall (Stream), Groups (Circles), Photo Albums, a Profile & Chat (more on this is here & here). Now let’s explore what sets it apart.
This s a typical Facebook News Feed & and a typical Google+ Stream. They look quite the same but things get different when it comes to handling these posts/your data.
clip image006 thumb Google Plus: What, Why, How and The Future
In Facebook what you can do with a post is: delete it or report it and that’s it. With Google+ you can do much more, have a look below:
clip image008 thumb Google Plus: What, Why, How and The Future
clip image010 thumb Google Plus: What, Why, How and The Future
You can Edit your posts & comments, Delete them, Disable the comments and Disable re-sharing it. The ‘Limited’ next to the time of post shows the type of the post (If it’s public, private or limited).
One post in above given snapshot is ‘public’ and I can Link to it, Report it, Block the person or Mute it (stop updates regarding this post – notifications).

    Chat

On the left side of your Home screen (below Notifications) you get the usual Gmail Chat the one you have in Gmail. It is much much better than Facebook Chat, in almost every aspect. You can video chat with your Gmail contacts even if they are not on Google+.

    Photos

Go to your Photos and it’s your typical Albums, friend’s pictures and stuff. The controls are almost the same way as with the posts, you decide which picture is to be shared with whom.
The improvement, so the improvement is Instant Upload. If you have the Google+ client (i.e. Android app) installed on your phone you can upload photos from your phone directly to your albums online right from the photos section on Google+ (basically your photos are uploaded in the background and then you decide which one you want to share with others).

    wi-Tribe Upgrades 1.5Mbps Endless Package to 2Mbps

Finally wi-tribe has thought of going broader by upgrading it’s endless package.

This time, wi-tribe has upgraded it’s 1.5Mbps connections to 2Mbps and becomes first in the industry to provide 2Mbps on WiMax protocol.
All existing customers with 1.5Mbps endless package will get promoted to 2Mbps for free and new connections will be available at same price tag.

It merits mentioning here that this package is only available for desktop modems while wi-tribe is currently offering only 512Kbps on it’s dongle.
Also as per details, volume consumption is same i.e. 40GB per month and wi-tribe really needs to rethink here about upgrading the bandwidth as well.
